"Gazprom" shifting the transit of natural gas to Europe through Nord Stream

Russian giant "Gazprom" is moving the transit of natural gas to Europe through Nord Stream, informs 4-traders.com. From Ukraine, the company began redirecting the gas intended for Europe to alternative transport routes such as the Nord Stream gas pipeline and through Belarus.

Ukrainian state company "Naftogaz" said that Russia has halved the volumes transiting through Ukraine to Europe. "And this is just the beginning", a spokesperson of "Gazprom" said.

Russia is Europe's supplier of natural gas, over 80% of its exports being transported through Ukraine's network. The disagreements over the transit prices and the price which Ukraine pays for natural gas imported from the Russian Federation have led to several disruptions in the delivery of natural gas to Europe. Thus, Russia looked for alternative transport solutions.

Last year, "Gazprom" launched the Nord Stream pipeline, which transports Russian gas beneath the Baltic Sea to Germany and has ensured its control over the national gas transporters of Belarus - Beltransgaz - in exchange for a serious discount of the price of natural gas.

Russia and Ukraine are currently blocked in the talks concerning the new contract for the supply of gas in which Kyiv insists in getting cheaper gas. In exchange for offering a much better price, Moscow is demanding control over the Ukrainian transport system.
